I find many things in life require luck and patience and being in the right place at the right time. At least with surf fishing, such a confluence results in dinner.
Also: I feel like a slightly backwards 10 year-old for giggling at the phrase “[I am] a very good bottom fisherman.”
My son, who is stationed (USAF) near Destin, and I have many, many hours fishing for Pompano at Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa, etc. We enjoyed your latest Pompano recipe and have had moderate success. Aside from catching and cooking Pompano we have had a lot of fun "tricking" out our surf cart. Similar to how hunters enjoying working on their hunting cabins we have taken to upgrading our cart prior to every trip.....so Hank next time you're on the panhandle and you see a couple guys with a grey wheeled beach cart, that has a solar powered fridge and propane grill on it, stop over and we'll cook you a great Hank Shaw venison sausage, and maybe, just maybe, some fresh pompano.....LOL. I'm a fair trout fisherman, mediocre bass/carp/warmwater, and hopeless in the salt.
I look at all that ocean, and figure probably 96% of it is fishless empty salt water. Finding the right location depends on tides, moon, winds, the storms out at sea for the last 30 days, etcetera. I'm amazed every time I actually catch something in the ocean, happens about 1 time in 30.
Patience and perseverance... I figure it's the key to fishing, hunting, living, and probably other stuff too.
Most of my fishing these days is from the boat, and consists of dragging various things at various speeds through the water to catch various things. I haven't cast a line from the beach in some time.
I am curious, how was the fishing on Dauphin Island? I have been going down there for 6 years now, always a great time. I got the pompano bug pretty quick. I now own way too much saltwater fishing gear for a guy who lives in the UP of Michigan. On that note, nice to see you mention Great Lakes surf fishing. That doesn't get much attention. I am right across the highway from lake Superior, certain times of year it can be great.
