Great story Holly. Humans are too good at destruction (including hunting if really used all the tech we have). A great example of how it is much more effort to keep nature alive.

Glad you had a successful dove hunt. I am pretty sure I chatted with you in the parking lot at the end of the hunt there last year that was not nearly as good. Hope you brought the same friend out that, I think, only got one bird last year and she had even more success.

Small world!

The friend you saw me with wasn't with me on opening day, but she went that weekend on her own - first solo dove hunt! - and got one, which is wonderful. Wasn't much flying that day.

From what I recall of your friend’s other “adventures” there, that must have been a proud moment on a very hot day.

Damn that's the best piece of writing I've read in a long time! I absolutely loved it! I would have done exactly the same thing. I don't know how we can explain to people that we are capable of nurturing small animals and also slaughtering and devouring them, but we do. It doesn't seem like a conflict at all to me, but during dove season many people - especially my lovely wife- seem deeply sad at the prospect of hurting the poor little lovie dovies, while I am ecstatically savoring this once-a-year treat. You did an excellent job of relating the experience of being a deeply irrational typical human being!
