The crown on the head of the hunter is the fact that the meat is expensive.

Calorie negative… there’s not too much in this life of modernity!

I often think of the reality “survival”show Alone. The food pyramid is upside down!! Properly raised animal fat doesn’t make one fat, although seed oils will. How does a farmer or rancher “fatten “his/her animals—grains.😉

I fear at my age, even though I don't eat that much, nothing is a calorie negative endeavor, sadly.

I know, right?! I live in far off northern Maine where the Ruffed Grouse is King; we shoot a lot of 'partridge', and we eat every damn one of them, but I swear, the walking is going to kill me. I won't lose an ounce, but I won't care either. God, I love bird hunting.

The birds are great, and it has become my favorite type of hunt. More for the camaraderie than just the partial freezer space fillers. This sharpie season in Montana we camped for five days with six guys and 11 pups - all the pups were related. Mine hunted with two of her daughters, her sister, and her mother. We shared a ton of stories and took our fair share of Huns, Sharpies, and were fortunate to bag a few Sage Hens as well. Bonus - I’m the only one taking wobbly bits to make your wonderful dirty rice dish. I haven’t mastered the pluck yet, but I’m trying. Total walk for the hunt was 34 miles for me; pups were 2x minimum per hunt. Sure some of the younger guys did more, and covered it faster. Sleeps were great as were the skies for the rise and set. A truly great time of year. As always - thanks for the story Hank and good luck with your other field follies this year!

Another great gustatory armchair experience! Starts my day off with a smile and the longing for a roasted pheasant leg on rye for breakfast. Thank you.
