This year you’ll have more chances than ever to hunt with me on one of my culinary hunts, and for the first time, they won’t all be in Oklahoma. I am doing a hunt in Montana and one in Minnesota, too. Here are the details.
Grouse
Up first will be grouse hunt up at Pineridge Grouse Camp in Remer, Minnesota. You’ll arrive the afternoon of September 19, hunt ruffed grouse and woodcock the following two days, and depart midday on September 22.
You’ll learn about grouse and woodcock habitat, how to pluck and process the birds, gear, dogs and dog work, gun safety (if needed), as well as get a chance to see (and buy!) some of owner Jerry Havel’s fine Italian double guns.
I’ll walk you through the best ways to cook your birds, and will cook everyone a nice dinner each night, starting with the evening of the 19th. We will hope to feature grouse and woodcock, but it all depends on the birds!
This camp is limited to 16 people maximum. Cost is $2750, which includes all meals, lodging, guided hunts with experienced dogs, a copy of my cookbook Pheasant, Quail, Cottontail, as well as all cooking and prepping classes. Licenses and tips not included.
Contact Jerry Havel at (218) 301-6083, or grousecamp@gmail.com to reserve your spot.
Ducks
Up next will be a duck hunt at the Teller Wildlife Refuge near Corvallis in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. This weekend will feature two guided duck hunts, dinners cooked by me, other meals catered by local restaurants, waterfowl prepping and cooking classes, and lodging at Teller’s historic homes. You’ll also get a copy of Duck, Duck, Goose.
This hunt is limited to 10 people maximum, and will take place from November 15 to 17. You arrive the afternoon of the 15th, hunt the mornings of the 16th and 17th, and depart midday that day.
Cost ranges from $1500 to $2000 depending on your lodging arrangements. Teller has set up a website where you can get more information and register for this hunt.
Deer
I’ll be with Coastal Wings in Loveland, Oklahoma at the end of the year for a few more culinary hunts. First up will be two deer hunts, back to back.
Arrival for the first school is December 1 with departure on December 4 at midday. The second school starts the evening of the 4th and ends midday on December 7. These schools are for does primarily; hunters can kill two per person.
Like the other schools, We will offer hands-on experience from harvest to table. The evenings are filled with cooking, and we’ll feature venison each night.
These schools sell out very quickly and are limited. We have only six spots for the first hunt, and we have eight spots for the second. Cost $2500, which includes 3 nights of lodging, all meals, the school, a copy of Buck, Buck, Moose, and up to 2 does.
If you want to upgrade to a buck, that will cost you an additional $2000. That said, if you want a big whitetail buck, they’re out there! I’ve shot a couple really nice ones.

More Ducks
We are hoping to keep things rolling at Coastal Wings starting December 7 with a duck and goose hunt. Same program and cost as the deer hunt, but we’ll be chasing ducks, geese and possibly sandhill cranes — they can be tricky in December, so it’ll be up to Larry if we chase the ribeye in the sky.
Arrive on the 7th, hunt the mornings of December 8-10, depart midday on December 10. I’ll have copies of Duck, Duck, Goose for this hunt.
This hunt is larger, and we can accomodate up to 20 hunters.

Can one buy and apply silencers for hunting guns? Strange I know, but I hate the sound, and that’s a big reason why I haven’t gotten into hunting w guns. (We use knives for farm mammals/birds).
These hunts sound fantastic. If I were in the us I would jump at the chance.
